ECHR: Inability of Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Italy to enter into an agreement with the State, resulting in its exclusion from funding system for religious denominations, amounted to discrimination

In today’s Chamber judgment in the case of Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses v. Italy (application no. 49687/16) the European Court of Human Rights held, unanimously, that there had been a violation of Article 14 (prohibition of discrimination) of the European Convention on Human Rights in conjunction with Article 9 (freedom of thought, conscience and religion) and Article 1 of Protocol No. 1 (protection of property).
